Rangers vs. Panthers New York aims to push Florida to brink of elimination in crucial Game 4.
The New York Rangers have the chance to push the Florida Panthers to the brink of elimination with a win in Game 4 on Tuesday night. After losing back-to-back games in overtime, the Panthers will attempt to even up this Eastern Conference Final before it shifts back to New York.
In each of the last two games, the Rangers have made just one more play than the Panthers, and those plays came from some unlikely heroes. In Game 2, Barclay Goodrow picked his spot over the shoulder of Sergei Bobrovsky for the game-winner, and Alexander Wennberg won Game 4 on a goal that deflected off his glove.
The Rangers are now just two wins away from the Stanley Cup Final despite an eight-game goal drought for star forward Mika Zibanejad. That's because players like Alexis Lafreniere and Vincent Trocheck have been picking up the offensive slack. Lafreniere added two goals in Game 3, bringing his playoff total to six, and Trocheck logged his eighth multi-point game with a pair of assists.
The Panthers put forth an admirable effort in Game 3, coming back from two goals down to tie the score in the third period, but there are no moral victories in the postseason. Florida has now lost two straight games in overtime, and it can't dwell on those missed opportunities.
Between a pair of power play goals and a perfect night on the penalty kill, the Panthers clearly won the special teams battle last time out. It was also an encouraging sign that Aleksander Barkov broke out of his four-game point drought with a goal and an assist. Those are at least a couple of things Florida can build upon as it looks ahead to Game 4.
For the second straight game, the Rangers defeated the Panthers in overtime. This time around, Alex Wennberg was the hero for New York as he deflected a shot past Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky to win Game 3 and give his team a 2-1 series lead.
The game-winning goal initially looked like a harmless play. The Rangers won an offensive zone draw, and Ryan Lindgren just threw a puck toward the net from the blue line. On its way to Bobrovsky, the shot caught a piece of Wennberg's glove and changed direction to beat Bobrovsky.
Things did get a little hairy for the Rangers after they took a 4-2 lead into the third period. Goals from Aleksander Barkov and Gustav Forsling, just 1:54 apart, tied the game and brought the noise level inside Amerant Bank Arena to a crescendo.
The Panthers continued to push for the winning goal, but Rangers netminder Igor Shesterkin made some show-stopping saves to get the game to overtime. In another strong postseason effort from Shesterkin, he stopped 34 of Florida's 38 shots on goal.
Two Rangers, Barclay Goodrow and Vincent Trocheck, kept their red-hot postseasons going with big-time production in Game 3. Barclay Goodrow scored a pair of goals, giving him two more playoff goals (6) than regular-season goals (4). Also, Trocheck took sole possession of second all-time in franchise history with his eighth multi-point game of the playoffs.
